Don't Stare

The relationship between the natural and the artificial permeates life in post-industrial capitalism. We see steel trusses and metal machinery as direct antitheses to the natural world, yet they are manufactured by natural beings. In this work, the figure stands front and center staring at the audience, but the stark, artificial reflection of a digital flash suggests that she is the one truly being watched. Her hair is loose and wild juxtaposed against the rigid scaffolding and straight metal rods that surround her. On every side, her naturality is confined by the structures that other humans erected.
